A weekend away in...

Puebla City

By far my favorite escape from Mexico City, Puebla is a charming and calm urban experience. Its contributions to Mexican cuisine (mole & chilis en nogada were both born here) and production of Talavera tile make Puebla a bright, flavorful, and easy choice for a weekend getaway.

Start your day with…
Espresso and cookies at Clemente Specialty Coffee
Green juice, breakfast, and people-watching at Hotel Royalty

Then head to one of my favorite museums or sites…
Museo Amparo
Biblioteca Palafoxiana
The Chapel of the Rosary (because while dripping with gold, donations are still “appreciated”)
The whimsical murals at Xanenetla
The ancient ruins behind Hotel La Purificadora that mark the birth of Puebla as a city
Callejón de los Sapos for antique (window?) shopping

Food & Drink:
Mezcal, pox, or tequila at the super sexy Destilado Urbano
Traditional chalupas poblanas at El Mural de los Poblanos
A light lunch and maybe a lecture amongst books at Profética
A shot of Puebla’s own raisin-liquor at La Pasita
Rooftop dining with Cathedral views at Attico 303
La Noria to see actual poblanos dining in a former hacienda.
Any street alley-turned-kitchen for molotes & cemites.

Hotels:
Mesones Sacristía de la Compañía (an eclectic 19th-century villa-now-hotel on Callejón de los Sapos)
Casareyna Hotel Boutique (Sleek, airy, and white)

Activity Suggestions:
Authentic Mole Cooking Class in a 19th Century Kitchen at Mesones Sacristía (FYI: best mole I’ve ever had)
A Maize Vodka tasting and food pairing at Casa Zea Tasting House
Make your own Talavera Tile at Casareyna
Shopping at La Parián for handcrafted Talavera tiles (if yours doesn’t turn out quite as sophisticated as intended)
A full day in Cholula
