A weekend away in...

San Agustinillo

The plan was to spend a few days in Mazunte. I quickly discovered that, despite its plethora of restaurants, cafes, beaches, and yoga classes, Mazunte was NOT my scene. The little town directly adjacent, however, was; San Agustinillo was exactly what I needed. It felt like a quiet refuge, where I could lounge on the beach for hours at a time, sipping juices or margaritas (depending on the time of day), watching brilliant sunsets , contemplating my existence and my highly intelligent decision to skip the chaos of Puerto Escondido. There’s not much to do, and so I did next to nothing, and was thrilled at the internal peace it generated.

I think about San Agustinillo often, as it continues to serve as a mental escape when I’m feeling too connected to the world around me and I want to retreat for a bit. I’d go back in a heartbeat, if only to drift off to sleep while listening to the sound of the thunderous waves of the Pacific crashing on the shore.

Start your day with…
Breakfast at the buzzing La Mora Cafe or the calmer El Sueño de Frida.

Head toward the only produce market in town, set in an alleyway that leads to the beach, to stock up on fresh fruits for the beach.

Spend your day on the beach…
I spent hours at Casa Corazon, sitting in a lounge chair under an umbrella, ordering juice in the morning and mezcal in the afternoon, and no one bothered me to do anything more.

Take a walk to Playa Aragon during low tide to take advantage of the tiny coves within the rocks that encase this nearly-private beach.

Spend your sunset at Punta Cometa…
Yes, everyone does it, and for good reason. It’s truly a breathtaking experience. When you arrive at the entrance, the path to the top of the cliff will split. While everyone else goes right, you’ll go left. I’m sure it’s the better view, and it’s definitely less congested. Alcohol is not allowed, so leave the bottle of wine at home.

Food & Drink:
Aside from guacamole at Casa Corazon and questionably “vegan” tamales sold to me by a viejita on the beach, I can’t say I indulged much in the local fare. I’ve heard excellent things, so check out my article below for suggestions.

Hotels:
I stayed at an Airbnb. Were I to go back, I’d stay at one of the following places.
Casa Pan de Miel
Casa Cometa
Cabañas Punta Placer

Activity Suggestions:
Watch sea turtles lay eggs in the sand (June to December)
Surf Lessons (Ask hotel reception to hook it up)
Take a colectivo to Zipolite and get naked while you swim
Whale watch with Pacifico Magico Tours
